Tentang Antara Dwipa/ About Antara Dwipa

Antara Dwipa adalah sebuah proyek yang bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi jejak kuliner India yang ada di Indonesia. 

Dwipa (atau Dvipa) sering digunakan untuk menjelaskan konsep tentang daratan, dan dalam proyek ini tercermin dalam relasi dua daratan, India dan Indonesia yang telah berlangsung selama dua milenia.
Selain pengaruh bahasa, seni, dan agama yang masih terasa di Indonesia, pengaruh India juga telah dan masih terlihat di dalam budaya kuliner Indonesia.  Akan tetapi, jejak boga ini seringkali luput dari perhatian.

Dari rumah kami di Jawa, kami berusaha untuk melihat jejak-jejak tersebut dan melihat konteksnya pada masa kini. Apa hubungan kue apem dari Jawa dan appam dari India Selatan? rempah-rempah Indonesia apa masuk ke dalam racikan masala di India? 

Melalui proyek ini, kami berharap untuk membagikan temuan-temuan kami, mencoba resep-resep, dan melakukan perjalanan di antara dua dwipa ini.

Tentang kami:

Sinta dan Palmer adalah suami-istri yang tinggal di Yogyakarta, Indonesia.  Sinta lahir di Yogyakarta dan telah memupuk rasa cinta terhadap makanan dari kecil.  Dengan latar belakang Kajian Budaya dan Media, Sinta menggabungkan ide-idenya tentang makanan, sejarah, manusia, dan identitas.  Tidak lupa, ia juga memiliki obsesi untuk mencari racikan rempah-rempah ‘terbaik’.  Palmer lahir di California yang memiliki obsesi lain dalam mendokumentasikan musik-musik tradisional Indonesia melalui arsip multimedia dan blog bernama Aural Archipelago.  Meskipun mengaku tidak jago memasak, Palmer mampu membedakan rendang yang enak yang tidak.

Antara Dwipa: Antara means "Between" in Indonesian, while Dwipa (or Dvipa) is a term borrowed from Indian cosmology for terrestrial realms, especially continents and islands. In the ancient Ramayana epic, the story tells not only of Jambudwipa (India), but also alludes to the realms of Yawadwipa and Suvarnadwipa, ancient names for Java and Sumatra. In the centuries since, these lands have become very 
real to each other as traders, brahmins, and soldiers have crisscrossed the Indian Ocean swapping culture and spices. 



We're two food lovers in Java exploring the culinary links between these realms, the lands now called India and Indonesia. India still looms large here in many ways, with everything from language to religion and art showing its mark. India's past and present influence on the food worlds of Indonesia, however, is often overlooked or minimized. From our home in Java, we'll navigate between worlds: what's the link between Javanese apem and the appam of South India? What Indonesian spices made their way to the masala blends of India? How are Indian-Indonesians cooking and eating their way between worlds?

With Antara Dwipa, we'll be cooking, researching, and traveling our ways through these connections with the hopes that, in the process, we can find and share a richer vision of both Indian and Indonesian food and all of the wonders in between.

About us: 



Sinta and Palmer are a husband-and-wife team living in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Sinta was born in Jogja and has been passionate about food since she was a kid. With a background in Cultural and Media Studies, Sinta takes her love of cooking (and eating!) and uses it to fuel her ways of thinking about the connections between food, history, and identity - not to mention her search for the perfect spice blend. Palmer is a Californian whose other obsession is Indonesian traditional music: he created the ongoing multimedia music archive and blog Aural Archipelago. He's not a pro in the kitchen, but he's pretty good at cooking up theories about the origins of rendang.
